A prospective, randomized, controlled and interventional study shows yoga significantly reduced all menopausal symptoms on the Menopause Rating Scale. Researchers in India assigned either an integrated yoga program (study group) or no yoga (control group) to 200 menopausal Indian women (ages 40 to 55 years). The yoga group practiced for 1 hour per day, five days per week for 3 months. Menopause Rating Scale testing consisting of 11 symptoms and 3 subscale scores (somatovegetative, psychological and urogenital) were obtained from the participants before and after the study.
The integrated yoga program was conducted in collaboration with Janardan Swami Yogabhyasi Mandal in Nagpur, India. The yoga classes included yoga asanas (poses) performed while standing, sitting, lying prone or in supine position on the floor, stretching each joint through its full range of motion; Pranayama Complete Breath, Nadi Shodhana/Anulom-Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing) and Bhramri Pranayam; and Meditation listening to the breath or chanting omkara to bring self-awareness and inner calm. The control group reported to the next yoga intervention after 90 days. Findings of the control and study group were compared and analyzed.
"This study proves effectiveness of yoga in reducing menopausal symptoms," the study authors write. "Yoga can be considered as a non-pharmacological option for management of menopausal symptoms.
